Beautiful Smile
It was a fine spring noon at the prestigious Konoha Academy. 16-year old Naruto Uzumaki sat at his desk looking out of the classroom window.
“If you have time to stare out of the window all day, I’m sure you have time to focus on your studies, Naruto.”
Naruto looked at his sister. “Sorry Karin. I have some things on my mind.”
Karin Uzumaki sighed. “I swear. How are you going to achieve your goals if you get so easily distracted? As an heir to the Uzumaki Conglomerate, you have to study hard and prove yourself so that you are qualified to run the company.”
“You’re an Uzumaki as well, Karin. Why don’t you run the company instead of me? You’re smarter than me.”
“I could, but I do need you to get enough of an education to be my right-hand man once I take over.”
“Yeah, as if that’s going to happen.” Naruto lazily sat in his chair. “I’d rather go on a book tour with Jiraiya-ji than be placed as your Number Two.”
‘How am I going to get him motivated? ’ Karin noticed a blue-haired girl watching Naruto from behind the classroom door. ‘And wherever my brother goes within this school, his Secret Admirer isn’t far behind.’
At that moment, an idea popped within Karin’s mind. She quickly walked out through the classroom door past the Secret Admirer and uttered, “Hinata-san, can I have a word with you in private?”
Hinata Hyuga quickly stopped watching Naruto and followed Karin down the corridor.
“How did you know I was following Naruto-kun?” Hinata asked.
“Almost everyone in this school knows about your crush on my brother. The only reason why no one said anything to you is because he’s oblivious and some of the teachers and students have money on Principal Tsunade’s betting pool on when he would notice you.”
Hinata nervously tapped her fingers together. “Was I really that conspicuous?”
“Don’t worry about it, I find the betting pool stupid anyway.” ( ‘Mainly because I’m family, I’m not allowed to put any money into it. ’ Karin mentally added.)
Karin changed the subject. “Anyway, I need you to help tutor my brother. He needs to raise his grades but he’s been distracted recently.”
Hinata was confused. “But shouldn’t you ask Sakura-san to tutor him? She has the highest score in every test we’ve done this year. Why are you asking me? ”
Karin grinned. “I could ask Sakura-san, but I think the stress of getting the top score will push her patience with my brother to the limit. Now imagine what happens when that patience runs out.”
The imaginary news report appeared in Hinata’s mind. “In breaking news, a top student in Konoha Academy has been convicted of assault while tutoring a fellow student.”
“And the second best scorer in our year is Sasuke Uchiha, but I doubt my brother would want his rival as a tutor.” ( ‘Though it would be dream come true if he tutors me,’ Karin mentally added.)
“Which leaves the third highest scorer on the list: Hinata Hyuga,” Karin explained. “And I figured that since you’ve been watching my brother from a distance, I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to properly introduce him to you.”
“Karin-san, why are you doing this?” asked Hinata.
“It’s because he’s family that I care about him,” Karin said. “Naruto’s smile can change people, as though it is a mystic force that can empower them to affect the world or change themselves for the better.”
Karin looked at Hinata. “I never told anyone else, but Naruto and I are actually cousins. Naruto’s mom and my dad were siblings and my dad was supposed to take over the Uzumaki Conglomerate but an accident claimed both my parents. When they heard the news, Naruto’s family adopted me without hesitation. At first, I felt sad and alone when I found out my parents died, but it was actually Naruto’s smile that helped me through that tough time. ”

[Flashback]
Ten year old Naruto sat on the Living room floor playing with his toys while his parents were in a different room talking to some people. After a few minutes, Naruto’s mother walked out of the room with a young red-haired girl wearing glasses. The young red-haired girl looked at the older red-haired woman with a nervous look.
Kushina smiled as she looked at the young girl. “It’s alright. We are family and we will take care of you.”
Naruto looked at the red-haired girl who was around the same age as him. “Your hair is pretty, like my mom’s,” Naruto complimented with a huge smile on his face.
Hearing Naruto’s compliment, Karin smiled, feeling happy for the first time since she heard what happened to her parents.
Kushina’s face had a wide grin as she saw Karin’s smile. “Naruto, I would like you to meet your new sister, Karin.”
[End Flashback]

After hearing Karin’s story, Hinata gave Karin a quick hug. “Even as a child, Naruto-kun’s smile helped you. It‘s that beautiful smile I see on his face every time that I can’t help but admire it.”
“It may seem that I’m being an overbearing sister to him, but I want what is best for Naruto,” Karin said. “He changed my life and I think maybe he can help change yours and at the same time, you can change his as well. And maybe in the future when he becomes the head of the Uzumaki Conglomerate, that smile of his can change others as well.”
Karin then had same smile that Naruto gave her on that fateful day. ‘Of course, I’m happy I can kill two birds with one stone. First is getting Naruto’s Secret Admirer to meet him, and then maybe Hinata can get Naruto motivated enough to studying.’
