Baby Blues
Bulma sat alone on the end of her bed. As she shook with silent sobs the tears ran down her face darkening the shirt stretched across her swollen stomach.
He had loved her hadn’t he? Now she thought about it he had never said the words but hadn’t it been implied at least? In every caress they way he held her, the way he said her name. She had thought that he had loved her but now she wasn’t sure.
Sitting on her bed alone in her room staring at the dark sky outside Bulma had never felt so alone. She felt alone like the empty night, no moon, no stars, just darkness. That’s what her life had become. She was alone.
She remembered the day she had found out she was pregnant, going to become a mum. She had never wanted kids, had never imagined them in her life. She was perfectly happy how she was. Bulma had never wanted to raise a family she was too busy working for that.
Yamcha had wanted them, he pointed out how great she was with Goku’s son Gohan and wouldn’t she like the pitter patter of little feet. She had laughed at him and said that if she wanted little feet she could build a robot.
But this was different now that it had really happened … she put a hand to her stomach as the baby kicked.
At first Vegeta was just an arrogant jerk that imposed his presence on her and her family. He had never been invited to stay with them, he just had.
And what was with his stupid ambition to be the best all the time. He had to be better than Goku, faster than Goku, but mostly all stronger then Goku. Constantly complaining and demanding her to make stronger and better equipment.
Bulma wasn’t sure when the attraction to him had began. She had always thought him to be good looking, better then Yamcha she had noted, but he had always terrified her.
When he moved in with them she seemed to be more self confident in her own home. She found herself enjoying the banter they shared. But when it had gone from insults to flirtation she wasn’t sure.
And then it was something more. His insults took on a flattering edge and his eyes seemed to follow her now. He had called her a blue haired goddess, he made her feel special and alive. She had never felt like this with anyone.
One thing had lead to another and before she knew it she had invited him in to share her home, her bed but most of all her life.
She liked she could go out with him when she managed to drag him away from training by telling him he had broke the machine when she had just disconnected a few wires and told him the parts would take a day to arrive. He would complain about it of course but it was only half hearted. He seemed just as trilled to be spending time with here even though he wouldn’t show it.
And the way other females looked at him! It worried him at first as her past experience with Yamcha had showed her she couldn’t trust the opposite sex when it came to the young ladies. But her worry wasn’t needed. He had only eyes for her and hungry eyes they were too.
She spent the happiest months of her life with Vegeta.
But why did he have to react so badly? She knew Vegeta wasn’t the family type that he wouldn’t be over joyed with the idea but this was too much. She had hardly seen him since she told him.
Bulma’s body racked with fresh sobs.
It had been too late to hide her delicate condition. Vegeta had sauntered into the house for breakfast as he usually did and caught her staring at her stomach in the reflection of the stainless steel fridge.
“What are you doing?” he said smirking at her.
“Well” Bulma started “I’ve got some exciting news”
“Let me guess” he said pouring himself a glass of juice “You’ve worked at how to make the Gravity Chamber stronger”
“No”
“You’ve learnt how to cook?”
“No”
He looked up at her “Well, what then woman!”
“Um” she began taking a deep breath and figuring it would be better to say it fast like pulling off a bandaid “I’m pregnant”
The glass Vegeta was holding exploded in his hand, juice and glass going everywhere and he stared at her with a look of pure horror on his face.
“Are you sure?” he said shifting his terrified gaze to her stomach
“Yes” she said looking at her feet; she couldn’t stand the way he was looking at her.
The silence seemed to become a presence in the room. Bulma held her breath waiting for him to say something. By the time she couldn’t stand it anymore she looked up and he was gone.
Months had passed. She grew rounder and Vegeta became more distant as the days went by. He was all but a distant memory now.
And now here she was, alone. Feeling someone watching her she looked to the door. There stood Vegeta, looking at her for the first time in months. She couldn’t meet his eyes. She turned and tried to concentrate on the window. He would be gone soon. He didn’t lover her that she was sure of and she doubted he ever had.
Bulma felt the bed sink as Vegeta sat down behind her. She hadn’t even heard him cross the room. She held her breath.
He put one hand on her shoulder and the other one around her waist to rest on the hand on her stomach. Very gently he kissed the back of her neck, and then a second time more hungrily.
Bulma closed her eyes, and her heart seemed to swell at his touch. Impulsively she took his hand and placed it on her stomach. The baby kicked.
She felt his sharp intake of breath and he stiffened. Bulma felt like she was going to start crying again.
Then Vegeta’s lips were at her ear and he whispered “Don’t worry woman, I’m training hard, I’m getting strong. Soon I will be strong enough to protect you and the baby … our baby”
And with that he was gone, leaving her alone to her thoughts, and, for the first time in months she felt hope.
