Summary: Deceit. Such a vague word. Exactly how does one explain such a basic action? This simple concept, Len Kagamine decides, is a very complicated matter.

Sophisticated simplicity.

Deceit. Such a simple word, but with so many meanings.

Like so many other words, this simple action can have many different interpretations. It is easy to fool oneself into believing they understand the written definition when they truly do not. So, deceit, Len Kagamine decides, cannot be explained by definition, but by scenario.

If Rin were to tell him the rack of meat in the oven was lamb, when in actual fact it was pork, she would be deceiving him. Not that Len would care; he loved her cooking either way. Sure, she almost blew up the entire kitchen the first time she’d tried cooking, but hey, over time, it had improved.

If, in the beginning, Rin had described herself as a neat and organised person and Len had discovered clothes strewn all over Rin’s bedroom floor and articles for Crypton Magazine uncompleted and three months overdue on her desk, then she would be deceiving him. Of course, that was complete bull. He knew Rin submitted her columns exactly a month and two weeks in advance and that her clothes were folded very neatly and arranged in rainbow order. Talk about a serious case of OCD.

If Rin were to continually tell herself that she was the most anorexic and underweight girl on Earth, when in fact she was perfectly healthy for her age, she would be deceiving herself. Len knew she wouldn’t, anyway; he’d threatened to slit her stuffed bunny’s throat if she so much as thought about it. He probably shouldn’t have done that – she’d begged him amongst rapidly falling tears for him to spare her precious Fluffy, breaking his heart and resolve and kind of ruining his best shirt in the process.

And if Rin were to cut off their engagement in favour of an elopement with Kaito or Mikuo or some other sick bastard (which Len prayed wouldn’t ever happen), she would be deceiving him. But Len knew her like he knew bananas. He knew she wouldn’t do that to him. Well, he wouldn’t stop her if that absurd scenario were to become reality; he loved her too much to bind her to a lifetime with someone who didn’t deserve her, a.k.a. himself. (Or so he told himself.)

But deceit, Len thought, wasn’t just a one-way street. Just as Len could apply the meanings of deceit to situations where Rin was the deceiver, he could also apply them to himself.

If he were to tell Rin that the chocolate cake sitting on the kitchen table was perfectly edible, when in fact it was spiked with hidden spices and traces of cyanide, he would be deceiving Rin. Not that he would ever do that to her. And it wouldn’t have been his fault, anyway. He couldn’t bake to save his life.

Likewise, if he had told Rin that he was an early riser, and Rin had caught him regularly sleeping in until ten thirty or later, he would be deceiving her. But he couldn’t do that, anyway. Rin was quite the noisy waker, and she usually woke up at five thirty in the morning. Sometimes, Len mused, sharing a bed with Rin was quite an ordeal, especially when he had stayed up late the previous night to finish some paperwork.

If Len tried to convince himself that he could play Mozart’s Twelve Variations of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star backwards whilst lying flat on his back, not only would be telling one mother of a fib, but he would also be deceiving himself. He’d once tried to play the original Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. He’d broken a key.

By presenting a few situations, it is easy to see how deceit can be defined. He is certain of that. The issue now, Len reckons, is the level of impact imprinted upon the subject of deceit. Just how heavily can deceit impact someone?

Rin could burn down the house, cause mass destruction to the neighbourhood and start World War Three and tell him to his face that the ladybug climbing the orange tree in their front yard did it. Would he care? Possibly. She could easily have legitimate reasons for doing such things. Would he believe them? Maybe. Then again, maybe not.

Likewise, he could cheat on her and date all the fine ladies in town, all the while telling her that she was the only one for him. Would she care? Most definitely. But then again, Rin could have some sort of hidden optimism and deduce that he did it only for her benefit. Did that line of logic even make any sense? Probably not.

Sometimes, Len believes, long periods of time can outwit any form of deceit. Knowing someone inside-out can turn the tables on an unfaithful relationship, and Len agrees completely. It took six full years of dating Rin Kagamine to gather the courage to propose and ask her to move in with him. After all this time, you’d think he’d know her inside-out. And of course, he does. He just does. He’d know if she was lying or being untruthful about something. Likewise, she knows him, and he knows that very well.

Sighing, Len turns from his office chair (nicknamed ‘Spinny Chair’ by Rin) to face his pretty fiancée, sleeping peacefully. He takes a quick glance at his wristwatch. 11:48pm. He’s never going to finish his column at this rate. He’s got another three articles to write, too. His boss is going to murder him. Rin always told him he was a slacker at heart, despite the glasses and overall geeky look.

Deceit, Len confirms, can throw itself in the paper-shredder and shred itself ten times over. He decides, as he climbs into the large bed and contorts his torso to match Rin’s warm body, that he hates complexity. After all, he muses as Rin unconsciously snuggles closer to him, simplicity is his forte.
