The Haruhi Suzumiya and Friends’ Special Pokémon Tournament

Itsuki Koizumi and Ash Ketchum were sitting in a commentator’s box in a stadium.

“Welcome to the first ever Haruhi Suzumiya and Friends’ Special Pokémon Tournament. I’m your commentator Itsuki Koizumi and with me is special commentator, Ash Ketchum.”

“Thank you, Koizumi,” said Ash. “Haruhi Suzumiya has organized this special Pokémon tournament because she feels that this is a good way for characters from different Anime series to build new bonds and promote universal friendship across various boundaries.”

Koizumi nodded in agreement. “Miss Suzumiya believes that if we allow characters to meet each other, it would allow the easy transition for characters to work with each other in crossover fanfics while at the same time allows her the opportunity to meet up other Aliens, Time Travellers, ESPers, Sliders and other various subcultures.”

“Either way, we hope that Haruhi Suzumiya’s promotion of friendship allows characters to lower boundaries and perhaps allows us to see new worlds as well. Anyway, the competitors are about to enter the stadium for our opening ceremony.”

Mikuru Asahina’s voice echoed through the stadium. “Ladies and Gentleman, please welcome our competitors into the stadium!”

Following Asahina’s announcement was ‘translation’ by Pikachu. “Pika pi pikachu, chu chupi pi pikachu pika chu pikachu!”

The first competitor to enter was a short blonde man with his long hair tied into a braid. “Edward Elric!” “Pika Chupi!”

The second competitor was a woman with long dark hair with lavender eyes. “Hinata Hyuga!” “Pipika Pika!”

The third competitor was a young Chinese man. “Li Syaoran!” “Pi Kachu!”

The fourth competitor was a young brunette woman with hair clips holding the side of her hair. “Yui Hirasawa!” “Chu Pikachupi!”

The fifth competitor was a teenage glasses-wearing girl with a red ribbon tied to her hair. “Homura Akemi!” “Chupika Kapichu!”

The sixth competitor was a young man with spiky multi-coloured hair. “Yugi Muto!” “Chupi Chuka!”

The seventh competitor was a short girl with long blue hair. “Konata Izumi!” “Pikapi Chupi!”

The final competitor was an average human being with a very unenthusiastic look on his face. “And finally, Kyon!” “Ka pika, Chu!”

The eight competitors waved at the spectator seats of Pokémon stadium, filled by a small group of people.

We return to Ash and Koizumi. “The eight competitors are now ready for the tournament,” Koizumi announced. “The rules are simple. Competitors are given rental Pokémon to use for one-on-one Pokémon battles. Competitors are free to use any move they believe their Pokémon can use to win the battle. Mr. Ash Ketchum will act as the referee for these battles to ensure fairness.”

[March 1: Edward Elric vs. Hinata Hyuga]

“Without any delay, let us begin the first battle between the Fullmetal Alchemist, Edward Elric and popular Naruto character, Hinata Hyuga!”

Ed and Hinata were on the field, ready for battle. However, both competitors were hesitating to throw their Poké balls.

“So, how should we do this? Ladies first?” asked Ed.

“You’re older than me, so you go first,” Hinata suggested.

“But, you have a bit more experience than me in doing this, since you usually hang around with Ash,” said Ed. “You should go first.”

Yui stood up from the benches and yelled, “Senpais! We don’t care who goes first! Just start the battle!”

Hinata immediately sent a death glare at Yui, causing the guitarist to drop down to her knees in repentance. “I’m sorry, Hinata-Senpai.”

Even before the first battle has started, Miss Hinata has used Glare on Yui and its Super Effective, getting an immediate apology,” Koizumi commented.

You don’t want to mess with Hinata when she’s mad,” added Ash. “She can be really scary when you push the wrong buttons.”

Hinata then calmly smiled and looked at her opponent. “After you, Ed-kun,” Hinata said in her usual soft voice.

“Sure, Hinata,” said Ed. Not wanting to anger Hinata further Ed tossed the Poké ball, sending out a Machoke into battle, while Hinata responded by sending out a Snorlax.

The first battle has begun and Miss Hinata is at a huge disadvantage,” Koizumi called out.

I wouldn’t be so hasty, Koizumi,” said Ash. “Snorlax is a tough Pokémon, so I don’t think you can rule Hinata out that easily.

Ed gave out his first order. “Machoke, use Seismic Toss!”

Ed’s Machoke grabbed Snorlax and attempted to toss Snorlax, but despite Machoke’s strength, Snorlax appeared to be a bit too heavy and it wasn’t even fazed at Machoke’s grapple.

Mr. Elric decided to start off with a Seismic Toss, but Miss Hinata’s Snorlax happened to be a bit too heavy for Ed’s Machoke to even lift.

After five minutes of Machoke attempting Seismic Toss, an unsure Hinata looked at the other competitors, looking for suggestions on what to do next.

“Just end the battle, Hinata-neechan!” Konata yelled out.

“Okay, Snorlax, use Body Slam,” Hinata ordered.

Snorlax nodded and then tilted its huge body over Machoke, crushing Ed’s Machoke under Snorlax’s weight.

“Machoke, no!” screamed Ed as he dropped to his knees in shock.

I don’t know what to make of this. Since Miss Suzumiya has made you the referee, what’s your call, Ash?” asked Koizumi.

“Ed’s Machoke is too flat to battle, Hinata wins this battle,” Ash declared.

Syaoran rubbed his chin. “Come to think if it, why didn’t you order your Machoke to use any other attacks, Ed? Why use Seismic Toss on the Snorlax?”

“It was a cool sounding name,” said Ed. “I thought it would work.”

Syaoran sighed. “You seriously do not know how heavy Snorlax is, do you?”

“Well, now I do,” Ed said, with a regretful tone.

[Match 2: Syaoran Li vs. Yui Hirasawa]

“Our second match is between CLAMP’s Syaoran Li and Hokago Tea Time’s Yui Hirasawa,” Koizumi announced.

Both Syaoran and Yui were performing some warm up exercises on their respective sides of the field.

“I have no idea what those two are doing, but I don’t think doing warm up exercises would make any differences in this battle,” said Ash.

“Time for me to start things off,” announced Syaoran, sending his Houndoom.

“Let’s go, Pikachu!” Yui sent out her Pikachu.

“Houndoom, use Flamethrower!” ordered Syaoran.

“Use Double Team, Pikachu!” Pikachu quickly created a bunch of duplicates, evading Houndoom’s Flamethrower attack.

At that moment, Syaoran pointed at Yui. “You call yourself a Pokémon trainer? You can’t simply use such a cheap tactic!”

Mr. Syaoran appears to be taunting Miss Yui because of her use of Double Team,” said Koizumi.

Yui fell for the taunt. “Pikachu, stop using Double Team!”

The duplicates of Yui’s Pikachu faded away, leaving behind the real Pikachu, making it an easy target for Syaoran’s Houndoom.

“I got you now!” Syaoran prepared to use his next attack when Yui pointed at Syaoran.

“Pikachu, send a Thundershock at Syaoran-Senpai!” ordered Yui.

Obeying Yui’s order, Pikachu unleashed a small jolt of electricity at Syaoran’s side of the field, with Syaoran barely avoiding the attack. Furious at Yui’s provocation, Syaoran charged across the battlefield towards Yui, who quickly panicked and ran from her pursuer.

“How dare you attack your Senpai, Yui!” yelled Syaoran.

“I’m sorry, Senpai!” apologized Yui.

Both Trainers have decided to take the fight to each other instead of using their Pokémon,” Koizumi announced.

It looks more like two kids playing tag to me,” said Ash as he quickly left his seat.

Syaoran quickly caught Yui in a hug as Ash quickly ran out to the field from the commentator’s box and showed a red card at both Yui and Syaoran. “Both of you are disqualified!”

“What? You must be mistaken,” said Syaoran as he held Yui in a now friendly hug. “Yui here is my good friend! Isn’t that right, Yui?”

“That’s right, Syaoran-senpai!” Yui said as she returned the hug to Syaoran. “We’re not fighting each other, Satoshi-senpai. We’re just playing around!”

“I don’t care! One shouldn’t attack the other trainer and the other shouldn’t escalate the situation!” With that, Ash had both Syaoran and Yui disqualified from the tournament.

“But we really are good friends,” protested the disqualified duo.

[Match 3: Homura Akemi vs. Yugi Muto]

“The next match is now between the Glasses-wearing Magical Girl, Miss Homura Akemi and the King of Games, Mr. Yugi Muto!”

“I wanted to face Homura in a battle!” Syaoran yelled from his bench.

You had your chance and you blew it, Syaoran!” Ash retorted.

Of course, Miss Homura is the underdog here. What would happen if she loses against the King of Games, Ash?” asked Koizumi.

Hopefully not a time loop like Endless Eight,” Ash commented.

It’s unlikely that scenario would happen, Ash, though the chances of alternate timelines of this one tournament would worry me just a bit,” said Koizumi. “Of course, with your resume, you wouldn’t have to worry.

On the battlefield, Homura was nervous as this was her first Pokémon battle, while Yugi remained calm.

“I will do my best and make Madoka proud,” said Homura.

“I’m more familiar with Children’s Card Games than real monster battling, but I think I can do this,” Yugi said. “Let’s go!”

Homura sent out her Umbreon while Yugi sent out his Espeon.

“Umbreon, use Faint Attack!” Homura ordered. Umbreon charged towards Espeon, landing a powerful hit.

Miss Homura has started with a Faint Attack, causing a good amount of damage to Espeon!” said Koizumi.

“Espeon, use Bite!” ordered Yugi.

Espeon retaliated by landing a bite on Umbreon. “But Yugi decided to fight darkness with darkness with a Bite attack!” said Ash. “Unlike the previous two battles, this one might be interesting.

“Umbreon, use Faint Attack from behind!” Homura ordered.

“I see what you’re trying to do,” said Yugi. “Unfortunately, it’s not going to work. Espeon, use Dazzling Gleam!”

Koizumi is surprised at the turn of events. “Espeon is using one of those new Fairy-type moves, which Umbreon has a type disadvantage against. This isn’t going to end well for Miss Homura!

Espeon unleash a bright flash at Umbreon, causing enough damage to knock Umbreon out in one hit.

“Umbreon is unable to battle!” Ash announced. “The winner is Yugi!”

[Match 4: Konata Izumi vs. Kyon]

“Our fourth match is between Gaming Ace Konata Izumi and Ordinary Human Kyon.”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence, Koizumi,” mumbled Kyon.

Suddenly, a man’s voice yelled from the spectator seats. “Edward Elric is mai waifu!”

“Rejected!” replied Ed. “Seriously, you should get a real girlfriend or boyfriend, whichever that is your preference!”

On the battlefield, Konata and Kyon got to their positions on the battlefield.

Konata was pumped for the battle. “Alright, let’s battle!”

Kyon sighed. “Let’s just get this over with.”

Konata sent out Charizard while Kyon sent out a Pignite.

“Pignite, use Flame Charge!”

Pignite covered itself in flames and charged towards Charizard. Charizard quickly used its physical strength to push against Pignite’s attack, resisting most of the damage. “It looks like it’s a deadlock between these two fire-type Pokémon!

This might come down to which of them is physically stronger,” commented Ash.

“Pignite, you can do this!” Kyon yelled. “Try to flip Charizard over you and use Heat Crash!”

Pignite understood Kyon’s command and grabbed Charizard, preparing to make its move. What happened next shocked everyone watching the battle.

“Oh my,” cried Hinata as she covered her mouth in shock.

I can’t believe my eyes,” said Koizumi.

“This isn’t happening,” said Kyon.

It turned out that Pignite’s attempt at flipping Charizard over resulted in Charizard reversing the move on Pignite by lifting Pignite off its feet. Charizard ended up carrying Pignite upside down as it cried and flailed in embarrassment.

Pignite has been caught in what I think is an ‘Upside-down Titanic’ manoeuvre,” said Ash.

Charizard slowly lowered Pignite to the ground as the poor Pignite couldn’t bear to look at everyone else due to its embarrassment.

Kyon landed a palm onto his face. “I give up. I don’t think my Pokémon can battle anymore.”

“Kyon has thrown in the towel. His Pignite is too embarrassed to battle,” Ash declared. “This match goes to Konata.”

[Semi-Final Match: Yugi vs. Konata]

“Due the match between Mr. Syaoran and Miss Yui ended in the disqualification of both Trainers, Miss Hinata has earned a free pass straight to the final,” Koizumi announced. “And so, we move on to the Semi-Final match between Mr. Yugi and Miss Konata.”

The King of Games, Yugi Muto versus our Gaming Ace Konata. This is a battle between two highly skilled height-challenged gamers,” said Ash.

Koizumi nodded in agreement. “Without further ado, let’s go straight to the battle!”

Konata and Yugi were facing each other in the battlefield.

“I’ve always wanted to face a legend like you, Senpai,” said Konata.

“I’m honoured to be your opponent, Izumi-san,” said Yugi. “Shall we?”

Konata sent out her Charizard while Yugi sent out his Espeon into battle.

“It’s Konata’s Charizard against Yugi’s Espeon! Neither trainer had changed their Pokémon from their last battle!”

“Espeon, use Psychic!” ordered Yugi.

Konata responded with to Yugi’s attack. “Charizard, dodge and use Fire Fang!”

Espeon unleashed a Psychic attack, but Charizard flew into the air avoiding the attack and flew towards Espeon. Espeon quickly evaded Charizard’s burning fangs.

“Espeon, use Future Sight!” ordered Yugi. Espeon’s body glowed for a few seconds before the light faded away.

Espeon had used Future Sight! That means that an attack will hit Charizard when it least expect it! Miss Konata must end this battle before that happens!

“This is our chance, Charizard. Use Wing Attack!” ordered Konata.

Charizard used its wing to strike Espeon, but Espeon swiftly dodged the attack.

“Hold him off using Psychic, Espeon!” Espeon sent out a Psychic attack at Charizard, but Charizard swiftly avoided the blast with a quick roll while flying.

“Use another Wing Attack!” Konata ordered.

As Charizard flew towards Espeon, with its wing ready to strike, Espeon looked up in the air, sensing something on its way to the battlefield. Yugi noticed Espeon’s expression and smiled confidently at his opponent. “If you were waiting for the opportune moment, that was it,” said Yugi. “Here it comes!”

A purple ball of energy appeared out of nowhere behind Charizard.

“Look out!” Konata screamed as the Future Sight attack hit Charizard from behind, knocking it to the ground. Charizard slowly stood up despite the heavy damage it received.

“Let’s finish this using Psychic, Espeon!” Yugi ordered.

Konata grinned. “Unfortunately for you, Senpai, this is the opportune moment I was waiting for. Charizard, use Flamethrower!”

Charizard roared as it shoots a powerful Flamethrower attack from its mouth, overwhelming Espeon’s Psychic attack and hitting Espeon. The relentless flames from the attack knocked Espeon out.

This is incredible! Miss Konata has managed to turn this battle around! She has defeated the King of Games in a Pokémon Battle! How did she do it?

Charizard has a special ability called Blaze that grants more power to its flames the moment Charizard is about to be defeated,” Ash explained. “Konata knew that her Charizard couldn’t dodge the attack, so she took advantage of that.

Konata nodded. “I did whatever I could to make Charizard conserve its flames before Future Sight hit it, hoping that Charizard could endure the hit when the attack arrived.”

Yugi smiled. “Not bad. You may have beaten me in a Pokémon battle, but let’s see how you go when you play against me in Duel Monsters.”

“We’ll save that for another fanfic,” said Ash. “Anyway, Yugi’s Espeon is unable to battle, so Konata is the winner of this match!”

[Final: Hinata vs. Konata]

“And here is the final match of the tournament, between Miss Hinata Hyuga and Miss Konata Izumi! What do you think this match would be like, Ash?”

“Well, Hinata only had one match in this tournament, but I get the impression that she plans to use a similar passive battle strategy as the one used against Ed,” Ash said. “Konata is probably going for more conventional battle strategies, so this one is a tough call.”

Hinata and Konata stood on the battlefield.

“Let us have a fair battle, Kona-chan,” said Hinata.

Konata nodded. “Here I come, Hinata-neechan!”

Hinata sent out Snorlax while Konata sent out Charizard.

“Let’s start things off with Flamethrower!” ordered Konata.

Charizard unleashed a Flamethrower attack at Snorlax, who took the hit. Snorlax was unfazed by the flames.

Incredible! Snorlax survived a Flamethrower attack!” exclaimed Koizumi.

Hinata’s Snorlax has the ability Thick Fat, which allows Snorlax to resist fire and ice-type attacks,” Ash explained.

“Charizard, use Wing Attack!” Charizard used its wing to strike Snorlax. But even with Charizard’s Wing Attack, Snorlax was still unfazed.

“Use Fire Fang, Charizard!” ordered Konata. Charizard tried to bite Snorlax with burning fangs, but Snorlax barely reacted to Charizard’s attack, thanks to the Thick Fat Snorlax had.

Running out of options, Konata had no choice but to attempt the final attack in Charizard’s current move pool. Konata sighed as she gave the order, “Charizard, try using Seismic Toss.”

Charizard sent a surprised look at Konata while Konata replied with a desperate look on her face. Charizard was aware of what happened to Ed’s Machoke when it attempted to use Seismic Toss on Hinata’s Snorlax before. Seeing no other choice, Charizard grabbed Snorlax and attempted to lift Snorlax up for the toss.

It looks like Miss Konata has ran out of ideas and she’s asking her Charizard to attempt a Seismic Toss. I’m sure we all know what happened last time when that happened,” said Koizumi.

After another five minutes of attempting to use Seismic Toss on Snorlax, Charizard collapsed onto the ground, completely exhausted just from trying to lift Snorlax up. Charizard looked at Konata, shaking its head in complete defeat.

“I don’t think Charizard has the energy to continue, Satoshi-senpai,” said Konata.

“If that’s the case, Charizard is too exhausted to battle,” announced Ash. “Hinata and her Snorlax are the winners of this Tournament!”

*

The eight competitors and the two commentators were on the battlefield as Hinata stood in the middle to receive her tournament prize.

Ash congratulated Hinata for her victory. “Congratulations for winning this tournament, Hinata!”

“I didn’t expect to win, to be honest. I’m not exactly as good as you as a Pokémon Trainer, Satoshi-niisan,” said Hinata. “And I’d like to thank everyone here for participating in this tournament with me. I can only hope that I represented my series well, despite me being the complete opposite of Naruto-kun.”

“Well, it would have been nice to have Naruto with us. It’s a pity that he’s too busy with his series to join us,” said Syaoran.

“Still, I’m glad to see that Hinata-senpai has won this tournament,” Yui said. “I wonder what prize is for this tournament.”

Koizumi nodded as he pointed at the large stadium screen. “If you want to find out, please watch this video we are about to show everyone.”

A video was played on the large stadium screen. Two characters with light red hair were standing in front of the Sydney Opera House looking at the camera, a guy wearing an eye-patch over his right eye and his glasses-wearing twin sister.

Greetings, Brigade Members! I’m Cyrus!” said the eye-patch wearing male.

The glasses-wearing girl waved at the camera. “And I’m Skadi and we’re the Mascots for the Sydney Manga and Anime Show, also known as SMASH!, here in Sydney, Australia!

We want to thank the participants of the Haruhi Suzumiya and Friends Special Pokémon Tournament and we hope that you are successful in the promotion of universal friendship across various boundaries,” said Cyrus.

We’ve also have been given the honour to announce the prize for the winner of this tournament: An all expenses paid trip to Sydney, Australia, courtesy of the SOS Brigade!” Skadi announced. “We hope to meet the winner and give them a private tour around the city when they arrive. Hope to see you here!

Both mascots waved at the camera as the video ended. The tournament participants were completely surprised at the prize Hinata had won.

“That’s quite an awesome prize,” said Ed.

“I actually won a trip,” said a dazed Hinata

Konata had a disappointed look on her face. “It would have been nice to spend some time at an Anime-related event in another country.”

“I agree, Konata-senpai,” said Yui. “I’ve never been to Australia before.”

“Don’t forget, Homura is here with us, so I can change the outcome to my liking and win the Australia trip instead!” Syaoran took out a replica of Homura’s Soul Gem and a Time Clow Card prop. “I Wield the Power over Time!

Nothing happened. Konata quickly joined in on the act and borrowed the Soul Gem replica. “I Command the Power to Reverse Time!”

“Maybe we need a Transmutation Circle! Ed, do something,” said Syaoran.

Ed clapped his hands to perform some ‘alchemy’ before lowering his hands and sighing. “I can’t do this.”

“I would have participated in the tournament, but Haruhi thought it would be unfair for me to join in,” Ash said. “But anyway, we should thank Homura and Yugi for helping us make this tournament a success.”

“It was a pleasure being here,” said Homura.

“It would have been nice if I made it to the finals and won the prize,” said Yugi.

“And let’s not forget to thank Kyon, for helping us make up the numbers,” reminded Ash.

“You welcome, I guess,” said Kyon.

Koizumi smiled. “Anyway, on behalf of the SOS Brigade, congratulations to Miss Hinata Hyuga, for winning the first Haruhi Suzumiya and Friends Special Pokémon Tournament and the trip to Australia!”
