"There is a moment of almost stunned breathlessness throughout the stadium as the referee's hand goes up and the score flips over. The roars of the crowd drown out the final whistle."
The moments following victory for Karasuno.
Together we are strong
The ball smacks into the palm of his hand and his eyes are open. There is all the time in the world and the court is open before him.
He's soaring above the net and everything on the other side of the court is moving in slow motion. Number seven is on the back foot, jumping desperately to push his hand across Hinata's strike while number twelve dives forward to fill the empty space.
A deep breath and he's swinging his arm down.
The thud of the ball against the court covers the sound of his own landing.
There is a moment of almost stunned breathlessness throughout the stadium as the referee's hand goes up and the score flips over. The roars of the crowd drown out the final whistle.
Chest heaving, Hinata is suspended in a moment of disbelief. His palm stings from its impact with the ball, but he can't remember where the ball landed.
Before this moment, he thought he'd crow his victory to the heavens and jump higher than the net. Instead, he turns away from the slumped shoulders of their opponents to share a look of incredulity with his team, joy only just starting to peek at the edges.
Tanaka breaks the tableau of shared emotion as he roars his elation and leaps onto Asahi's back. Nishinoya joins in the exuberance by knocking Tsukishima into the duo and ensuring they all end in a heap on the floor. The captain's laughter cuts short when a hand reaches out of the pile to drag him down into the pile of limbs. Even the bench joins in with Suga racing over to join the growing mound of Karasuno players.
Hinata takes a step away from the net towards the rest of his team, but finds himself brought to a halt by the sight of Kageyama. He's standing there with a wistful smile twisting his face, watching as their teammates pile onto each other as though to try to contain the limitless bounds of their happiness right now. In this moment Hinata can't bear to see Kageyama look anything less than completely thrilled. They've won and Kageyama has to feel just as elated as Hinata does right now.
He pivots away from the Karasuno dog pile and launches himself at Kageyama. The king of the court lives up to his title and manages to avoid Tsukishima's fate by catching Hinata mid-leap. This puts him face to face with Kageyama, held tightly against the other boy's body. Stupidly Hinata has no idea what to do now.
"Kageyama!" he shouts in Kageyama's face. "Kageyama! Kageyama!"
"Stop shouting at me idiot!" Kageyama screams right back.
"We won. Kageyama, we won!" Hinata tries to bounce with the joy that fills him at that statement.
Kageyama's hands tighten on his hips, probably to prevent the collision of their heads but strangely, it seems to ground the emotion in Hinata. The all encompassing swell of happiness that expands against his ribs, stretches at his lips and prickles at his eyes.
He drops his face against Kageyama's shoulder to hide his face and repeats more quietly, "We won, Kageyama."
"Yeah, we won," Kageyama says just as quietly.
They pause like that for just a moment and then Kageyama shoves roughly at Hinata's shoulders, pushing him away.
"We won," he says gruffly, "so stop blubbering already cry-baby."
Hinata squawks indignantly, "These are manly tears of victory." He turns towards the Karasuno team to get Tanaka's input, "Tanaka, tell him about the glory of a tearful victory."
Turned away from Kageyama he starts at the hard push against the base of his spine that sends him flying into the mound made up of his teammates. They were just beginning to untangle limbs so his presence on the top of the pile earns a few startled groans.
His own breath rushes out of him as another body lands on top of him to crown the pile.
A chorus of groans sound at the additional body.
From his place at the bottom of the heap Tsukishima moans, "Get up Kageyama! I think the addition of your fat arse just broke my ribs."
Hinata can't see it, but he can hear Kageyama's smile when he replies, "The only fat arse here is at the bottom of the pile. Don't push your body issues onto me Tsukishima."
Tsukishima's response is inarticulate. The captain decides to rein them in before their bickering goes any further barking out their names with his preferred test-me-I'm-feeling sadistic voice.
Hinata has Suga's shoulder digging into his stomach, Yamaguchi's knee compressing his ribs and Kageyama crushing him onto their teammate's sprawled limbs.
He can't help it, laughing with what little air he has.
The Karasuno crows are flying again.
