Summary:
It was not her fight, but somehow she had made it her own. In order to fight for herself and others, she would push to the limitations of her own human body and even beyond them. If fighting and dying on the battlefield was better than living for nothing, then her life was a small price to pay for the power to fight.

Infinite

She had grown up in a time of war; fighting was of no foreign matter to her.

By now, it had become almost second nature; she no longer hesitated when it came to dousing her enemies in flames, nor when her foe begged and pleaded for her not to pull that dagger across their neck. From the moment her village had been torn apart to when she was placed on the frontlines of the elite Class Zero, she had come fighting all the way. But not once had she thought to consider who or what she was fighting for, or how she would be living her life differently if she were not fighting under the crimson banner of Suzaku.

That was, until Machina had asked her a fated question one day.

“Why did you decide to become an elite candidate?”

The question had lingered between the two of them, sending her mind around in circles. What exactly was the reason she had become an elite candidate? Why risk her life for a cause that seemed like a futile battle already lost?

It was not her fight, but somehow she had made it her own.

She had thought of her friends, of her family in that village she once called her own. It no longer existed, but its former presence was what spurred her to want to fight. She had been powerless to save her village; never again would her weakness hold her back.

Having heard of the elite candidates and of the Peristylium Suzaku, she had aspired to become one of them. She wanted to use her newfound strength to help others, fighting the battles that no one else was able to. She sought to become the legendary Agito in order to distance her from the weak self who had been powerless to save others.

However the coloured mantle could only bring her so far; though her resolve grew, her body remained fragile and weak, held back by a disease that reminded her of her limitations.

But even when her body gave way and she couldn't keep her eyes open anymore, still she fought back. She wasn't ready to succumb to the pain, nor would she go down without a fight; fighting and dying on the battlefield was better than living for nothing and letting the sickness kill her instead.

As her mind swam in pits of black and faded in and out of consciousness, she tried to push herself, to tell herself she wasn't ready to sit back and let others protect her. She wanted to fight until her final dying breath.

In that moment, she heard a voice calling to her. It cut through the emptiness of her mind like a beacon of light, pushing back the darkness that threatened to pull her under again.

Become l'Cie.

That was all it said. And with that command came the promise of strength; strength that would manifest in eternal power, and all it asked in return was that she fight for it.

If she was being called to fight, she would.

Her body was weak, frail and limited by human potential; as a l'Cie, she wouldn't even be human anymore. But when the power was enough to allow her to fight for what she wanted, what did it matter that she would lose herself in the process?

Fighting as a l'Cie was better than dying a human; her life was a small price to pay for the power to fight.
