Summary:
“Lost in his thoughts, Jean didn’t notice himself veering off course, nor the rest of his squad.”

It’s strange how even the worst of situations can teach you life lessons.
But unfortunately, not always the best ones.

Thanatophobia

The screams of men carried across the still air.

Jean shivered, hugging himself and trying to think not of what fate had befallen one of his fellow members in the Military. Not for the first time, he cursed his foolishness for joining the Recon Corps.
I had the opportunity to live far away, comfortable inside Wall Sina, he snarled to himself, and I threw it away for this?

Trost District was a ruin. What had once been a bustling, crowded area of people was now a smoky mess of buildings, Titans, and suspicious red marks on the ground he didn’t want to think about. Jean shuddered again. It was hideous.

Movement in his peripheral vision grabbed his attention. A small, eight metre class lumbered towards him. He was up on a rooftop, so he would be safe, but even so the thing disgusted him and he turned to Connie, along with the rest of his squad.

“Let’s go somewhere away from these Titans,” he said. Connie frowned.

“Aren’t we supposed to be killing them?” He asked. Jean fought down the urge to hit him, instead gesturing at the Titan nearby.

“Do you want to go at that thing?” He snapped back. There was a moment’s silence. Then Connie shook his head. “Good. That’s what I though. Let’s go.”

As Jean sailed alongside the others with their 3D Manoeuvre Gear, he wondered why everyone always seemed to be so unbelievably noble. They all felt as if they could save the entire human race by throwing themselves in front of Titans. A ridiculous idea, by Jean’s standards. They might as well throw themselves off Wall Rose.

Lost in his thoughts, Jean didn’t notice himself veering off course, nor the rest of his squad. Not until, of course, stopping on a rooftop to speak to the others, he found himself facing nothing but an awkward, lopsided chimney that seemed to have been knocked over by a Titan.

“Uhh… Guys?” beginning to panic, Jean took a long look around him. He couldn’t see any of them on the rooftops. The panic swelled to a crescendo.

“Don’t give me this,” he growled, smothering his fear with anger. He couldn’t have been separated from them for such a long time that were out of his eyesight. That would only mean…

“What kind of idiots would go on the ground?” He moaned. There was nothing more he wanted to do right now than leave them to get mauled on by some Titan, but there was still some humanity left in him, he supposed, for some external force made him use his 3DMG, searching the ground for his comrades.

A couple of minutes later Jean stopped on the ground, more than ready to hit something- preferably Connie’s annoying shaved head the next time he saw him. It was almost as if his squad had disappeared into thin air.

There was a tremor in the ground. Jean turned to look behind him and he swore his heart skipped a beat.

There was a fifteen metre Titan coming.

Straight at him.

For a moment fear overtook his senses and Jean stood there, paralysed. Then rationality came to him. In a brief flicker of a second, he thought of his fellow squad members, idiots like Eren, Connie and Sasha who would easily charge at a Titan if it meant helping their friends.

They may be thick headed, he thought to himself. But they have some sense behind it.

Jean raised his sword high, the light bouncing of the smooth blade as if it were a beacon of light.

I could stay and fight for the ones I love, the ones that have cared for me all this time.

He sheathed the sword and activated his 3DMG, setting off in the opposite direction.

Or I could leave.

As far as Jean was concerned, there were other ways of showing affection without getting yourself killed.

It was exactly four minutes and forty seven seconds later that he met up with the rest of his squad, and just like Jean had told himself, Connie received a sharp whack on the back of his head.

“Ow!” He complained. “It’s not my fault that you went off elsewhere! We were just on the rooftops nearby you!”

“You should have noticed that one of your squad members was gone!” Jean scratched his head and sighed. “Whatever. Let’s just go.”

Shortly after the events of Trost, Jean reflected on that time. He considered what might have happened if he’d fought the fifteen metre class.
I probably would have died, he thought bluntly. Despite everything that had happened in the near past, the corner of his mouth quirked up in a tight grin.

That shows you idiots, he smiled quietly to himself, with your morals of fighting for the ones you love and such. When death is in your face, it doesn’t help at all.
