Summary:
Coming to terms with oneself is hard enough but when you have changed into something you cannot recognise, what can you do? Forgiving and forgetting is not easy when all of society hates you and your kind. Then, must one simply accept that there is a raging demon inside?
Compare and Contrast
Even after he had experienced his first meal, Kaneki still felt absolute disgust towards the idea of consuming another. Whether it was simply the idea or the action that made him feel as though he would never ever commit such a savage act against his kind again.
Though he had to come to terms that he needed it for the sake of his sanity and wellbeing as well as turning down a pulsing urge to eat Hide, he couldn’t cope. Not now. There must’ve been another way of coping and he had found coffee, a completely reasonable snack for a human being. Only it wasn’t sufficient for his needs, leading towards a torrent of self-imposed torture.
He wasn’t an animal he told himself. Chanting it over and over inside his head to help him believe it was the truth and the only truth. There was no way he could be something that rampaged the streets after dark and terrorised something that was previously peaceful.
He wouldn’t let himself be swallowed by the blood lust of his other half.
Now wasn’t the perfect time to dawdle on such thoughts though, Hide was already pulling on his sleeve to see the lion attraction next.
“Kaneki, let’s go, otherwise we’ll miss them. You know how lions are, right?” A cheery and light tone filled the atmosphere as if it were singing to fill his ears with the melody of happiness.
“What are you on about Hide? Lions are perfectly capable of waiting.” Similarly, a teasing tone replied to his friend’s earlier statement.
Biting back a smile when he just rolled his eyes at his friend’s sarcastic response because even Kaneki understood that Hide was relieved he was feeling better.
“Oh look Kaneki! The mother’s feeding her cub, isn’t that adorable?”
Instead of the expected response to tender affection, his only acknowledgement was his blank stare.
It reminded him of the time he spent at Anteiku and all their growing support for one another. The care he was given even when he wasn’t one of them. Being on the boundary between what was once what he believed to be good and evil and not being either but also being both.
When he gazed at the lions, he imagined himself in the cub’s position. Just a small baby learning the ways of the world but still incredibly ferocious if approached or placed in a dangerous environment. He was so similar it was scary, incredibly unnerving but also comforting to know he wasn’t the only one stuck in this awkward position in life.
Animals were the predecessors to humans and they created the necessary traits for someone to survive. Then came along the ghouls which appeared out of nowhere who also carried similar characteristics to humans. So many people had been unnerved by their uncanny resemblance to themselves and he himself had fallen into that trap of deception.
But wasn’t it all to just fit in so that they weren’t attacked. Numbers won against sheer power after all. Maybe it was just a natural animal instinct being awakened inside ghouls.
So many of the ghouls he knew didn’t want this fate that had been handed down by God because it was unfair and unjust when they had not committed any wrongs. This mere scene helped him understand how everyone had a strand of animal inside themselves.
It was okay to let it out at times, it wasn’t a beast. It was just part of your personality and for a second he could here the chant ‘I am not a beast’ fade away into the darkness of his mind.
Ghouls weren’t that different to humans other than the fact that their tastes in food were slightly more uncommon within the human society. Who has coffee all day every day?
