comfortable routines
“And now the group you’ve all been waiting for! Having taken Japan by storm, they’re now performing for us one of their most memorable songs. I present to you, the idol group, μ’s!”
The audience bursts into applause as a bright spotlight shines onto the stage, blasting away the chilly night’s blanket of cool air, the light basking the nine girls in illumination and warmth. At the centre of the stage, Honoka lifts her head to gaze upon the audience who are masked in darkness. She smiles. She lifts her arms, reaching to them. After a shallow breath, her steady voice rings out over the crowd, the first few notes of “That Is Our Miracle” echoing in the stadium.
“Honoka! Oh, for goodness’ sake. Honoka!”
Umi’s clear voice pierces Honoka’s sleep. Blue eyes blink open in surprise.
“Umi? What is it?” Honoka’s voice is hoarse and sleepy.
“Get up Honoka! Isn’t it your first day at work?” Umi clicks her tongue impatiently. “And just after you’ve been begging the gods for work for half a year now, did you forget already?!”
Honoka turns, first to her clock, then to her calendar. Realisation dawns on her. She scrambles out of bed, yelling.
“Ahhhh! I CAN’T BELIEVE IT! Thanks Umi! You’re a life-saver!” Honoka runs out of the door with a slice of toast in her mouth as she tries to kick on one of her heeled pumps, nearly tripping into the door in the process. The door closes before it slams open, startling Umi and Kotori.
“Oh and see you two this afternoon!” Honoka calls around her slice of toast, waving. The two girls wave back before the door slams shut and the mop of pumpkin coloured hair disappears.
Umi shakes her head as she sets down a plate in front of Kotori and herself. Kotori tilts her head and smiles.
“It’s just like Honoka, isn’t it?”
“Jeez, if only she would be more responsible for herself!” sighs Umi, but Kotori knows it’s with exasperated affection.

Rin Hoshizora yawns a little loudly, before lethargically stretching out her arms and legs as far as possible. This results in her feet kicking the back of the seat in front of her, the person seated in it flinching as a result. Satisfied that there is no adverse reaction, Rin yawns again, louder this time. Next to Rin, Hanayo sighs before continuing with her notes. If Rin gets reprimanded, it’s not Hanayo’s fault. More likely than not though, there will be a rant that evening on their university’s anonymous submissions page, complaining about how “that girl with the short girl yawning so loudly throughout the Sports Therapy lecture should just go home!!!”
“Are there any questions?” the lecturer asks his students.
“Rin’s bored,” says Rin matter-of-factly to Hanayo. Unfortunately, this is a lot louder than intended, and most of the attendees in the lecture hall hear it, including the lecturer. There is some sniggering before the lecturer sighs, shaking his head, and begins describing his next slide.
“Rin!” whispers Hanayo with slight annoyance. “Focus! Otherwise you’re going to have to attend summer school again!”
Rin rests her head on the table while facing Hanayo. “Well, as long as you help me, that’s fine with me, meow.”
“Rin! That’s not the point!” Hanayo can’t believe how carefree Rin is right now. About one week before exam time though, that’s exactly when Rin would start panicking and beg Hanayo to tutor her. Every. Single. Semester. Hanayo couldn’t take double the stress of the average university student!
Rin hums cheerfully, kicking the seat in front of her to the tune of “I Love You, Hooray!” as she takes a sideway selfie (Hanayo in the background looking off-camera) with the caption “lol Hanayo’s so studious :3”. She sends it to Maki. Not half a minute later, Maki returns with a selfie of her own. It features herself at an unflattering angle, one eyebrow raised, looking extremely unimpressed. The caption reads, “focus on your lecture! >:(”
Rin screenshots the image, snickering. Maki sends another image not long after, this time a closeup of a medical textbook, with the words “DELETE THAT!!”
”Nope, meow!” Rin says loudly and gleefully. An annoyed student behind her hushes her loudly. Hanayo simply shakes her head. Rin is more hyperactive today than usual and Hanayo can guess why; this afternoon, they were going to meet up with the others again.

Nozomi smiles after replying to a comment on her latest post. It was rather amusing to see Nico commenting on her tarot blog “anonymously”, asking for relationship and life advice.
’NI NEE COMMENTED: help me, TAROT MAMA! (っ ºДº)っ I think they like me but sometimes they act so evasive about it. ლ(ಠ益ಠლ) I definitely like them… But we come from worlds apart and it makes me… insecure?! ༼;´༎ຶ ༎ຶ༽ I’m not getting any younger here either. What do I do?!’
’TAROTMAMA REPLIED: Ni Nee, you should definitely take the plunge and ask them out! :-) You two definitely have a lot in common. Sometimes people are just bad at communicating their feelings. And you said it yourself, you’re not getting any younger! Please let me know how it goes! :^)’
”Seriously?” sighs Eli when she sees Nozomi hunched over her laptop with a familiar mischievous glint in her eye. “I can’t believe you sometimes.”
”Eli, you’re back early,” Nozomi says cheerfully. “Besides, I like being match maker.”
Eli grumbles a little, muttering something about losing a bet to Nozomi over who Hanayo ended up dating thanks to a certain purple headed girl’s intervention, before going into the kitchen to collect a cake from the fridge. “Well, I asked my boss to let me off earlier so I could join everyone today. It’s a rather rare occasion that we all meet up at once.”
”Of course,” says Nozomi, replying to one last comment from user Tomato about her own dilemma over asking out “an unpredictable upperclassman”, before shutting her laptop and standing up. “Shall we go?”
The nine girls line up on the grand stage, taking a bow before raucous applause. Honoka’s tentative voice rings out.
”As you know, this is our last concert. We are disbanding to pursue our own pathways. But we, together as μ’s, wanted to thank you all for supporting us on this journey that started simply to save our school. We never would have thought we could have made it this far. So from the bottom of our hearts, thank you for supporting us.”
Vermillion curtains draw before them as they receive a standing ovation.
