Summary:
Haruhi accidentally tells Tamaki about surprise birthday parties, of course when The Twins remind their king that a certain someone's birthday is today, Haruhi is forced into a situation she doesn't approve of.
Happy Birthday Kyoya-Senpai
Haruhi had never regretted opening her mouth more than she did at that moment. Even the fancy tuna incident fell pale in comparison to what she had just said. Mentally kicking herself for forgetting whose presence she was in, Haruhi tried to step away from the overly eager Tamaki but a hand on each shoulder stopped her. It wouldn't take a genius to know the twins were behind her.
"Did you just say ‘Surprise Birthday Party?’" a voice drawled from her right causing Haruhi to tense up.
"N–no I didn't." Unconsciously her voice rose at the blatant lie as she tried to shrug off the twins’ arms.
"Yes you did!" Both twins cried out, resisting Haruhi's attempts to pry them off her shoulders.
"Your hearing must be off!" she snapped, finally wriggling out of their grasp.
Before she had time to savour the taste of freedom, Tamaki wrapped his arms around her in a somewhat suffocating hug.
"Oh Haruhi!" He cried, squeezing her against his chest. "That's a wonderful idea!"
"Get off me!" she yelled, struggling to get out of his embrace.
"Haruhi! Is it true that we're supposed to scream out 'surprise' when the birthday person enters the room?"
"What if they're afraid of loud noises?"
"Do you still have to say surprise?"
“I'm not telling you guys anything!” Haruhi snapped, finally breaking free of Tamaki's embrace, who looked extremely hurt at this.
"But Haruhi!" He wailed throwing his hands around in a dramatic manner, "Daddy wants to learn more about commoner celebrations!"
Haruhi easily dodged Tamaki's attempt at another hug, causing him to trip and faceplant the floor at her feet, much to the twins’ amusement. A brief smile flicked across her features as the twins’ howled with laughter, holding one another for support. That was their king, a man who had the ability to trip over anything.
"What commoner celebration?"
There was only one person whose voice was that sickly sweet. Haruhi turned around to face the two seniors and bowed her head slightly in acknowledgement. Mori looked as stony faced as ever, while his companion was the face of innocent curiosity.
Tamaki seemed to have recovered instantly as he jumped up and down in excitement. For all it was worth Haruhi did try to tell them that Kyoya would yell at them for talking amongst themselves and not actually hosting the girls who sat a few metres away, but it fell on death ears.
"My darling daughter came up with the most wonderful idea Honey-senpai!" He began, waving his hands around in joy. "We're going to throw a surprise birthday party for Mommy!"
"A party for Kyou-chan?" Honey repeated with an innocent smile.
“Haruhi mustn’t have heard about Kyoya-senpai’s birthday rule.” One twin murmured behind Haruhi with a slightly condescending smile on his lips.
“Or about last year’s birthday stunt.” The other added, causing the small group to shudder in the memory of their shadow king’s birthday party.
Haruhi glanced nervously over at Kyoya who at that moment locked eyes with her. She knew that look. That look meant trouble. And trouble meant her debt was about to increase.
"It doesn't matter," she hissed, interrupting Tamaki who was going into detail about commoner traditions. "Just forget I said anything!"
Before Tamaki could say anything else, Haruhi had started to push him towards his waiting customers. If Haruhi thought that’d be the end of the matter she would be sorely disappointed. The twins were beside her in an instant, grabbing her shoulders to stop the flow of movement.
"Of course it matters!" one twin cried; a mischievous look in his eyes.
"Haruhi wants to share this commoners tradition with us," the other continued, the same gleam in his eyes.
"We can't disappoint her after she went to such efforts to say her idea." They concluded winking at Haruhi who suddenly realised what they were up too.
Oh no you don't.
Tamaki spun around and faced her with a familiar look. She didn't have time to move as he embraced her again. She could hear him awwing above her head as she struggled to get out of his arms. The cause of this sudden embarrassing display of affection by their king, were hi-fiving one another behind Haruhi’s back.
"Daddy will never let that happen!" Tamaki cried, squeezing her tight. "That's settles it then! We shall throw Mommy a surprise birthday party!"
Three voices yelled a cheer at this statement which was apparently the last straw for a certain high ranking student.
"Haruhi! A moment please."
Flinching at the sickly sweet tone that was only ever used when Kyoya was asserting authority over the rest of the club, Haruhi suddenly felt Tamaki release her from his tight embrace. As it took her a few seconds to get her balance back she noticed the looks her fellow hosts were giving her. Honey smile was sympathetic while she got an encouraging nod from Mori. The twins were sniggering beside her as if they had planned to get Haruhi in trouble while Tamaki glanced over at Kyoya with puppy dog eyes.
Haruhi didn’t need to turn around to know what Kyoya’s response was to Tamaki’s attempt at pleading. A moment later the king of the host club was crouching in the corner covered in gloom, muttering something about upsetting mommy and not being able to save his daughter from the wrath of an angry Kyoya. The other club members huddled around Tamaki, the twins in particular started to tease him about not being strong enough to save Haruhi.
Turning her back on her fellow hosts, Haruhi started the long walk towards Kyoya. She raised her head just in time to see the searing aura Kyoya was giving her friends before his calm demeanour quickly took over. A quick glance at their customers proved that once again, Kyoya had timed his reaction perfectly. As she approached The Shadow King, Haruhi couldn’t help hearing Tamaki’s suddenly flamboyant greeting as he made his way over to his customers again. On her right Honey was chewing on cake with Mori grunting something, probably chastising him over all the crumbs he was making. The twins on her left were already halfway through their forbidden love act.
It was if those past few minutes of talking had never happened.
The 'cool' host had picked the table furthest away from everyone, the table Haruhi knew only as the table where Kyoya sat when he was increasing her debt. I haven’t done anything wrong. Haruhi thought, trying to convince herself. They were the ones who reacted poorly to my suggestion. Haruhi was making her way over to Kyoya when she noticed that despite his position at the far end of the room, he must have been able to hear at least half of what was being said. The fact she could hear the voices of the other hosts from the distance where she was at that time proved it once again. If I can hear them from here and they’re not even yelling then surely Kyoya would have---
Kyoya barely looked up from his black book as he indicated the empty seat opposite. Haruhi obediently sat down, like a child in trouble with a parent and waited to be spoken too. Its not like I wanted to talk to them about the party. How was I supposed to know rich people didn't throw birthday parties?! After what felt like forever, but was only a few seconds, Kyoya finally snapped the book shut with a flick of his wrist.
"Haruhi."
Play dumb.
"Yes Kyoya-sempai?"
"I thought we discussed this on Monday--"
Honesty is the best policy.
"I told them it was a bad idea!" She cried, trying to defend herself. "But they don't listen to--"
"Haruhi."
Kyoya used a finger to adjust his glasses.
"I understand that it’s a usual thing for a commoner, especially a woman, to converse alot, but you must remember that for all intent and purposes you are acting as a male."
Haruhi blinked in complete confusion. I thought he had overheard our birthday party conversation. Her eyes began to narrow as her brain caught up with what he had just said. Hold on a moment, is he actually blaming me for them constantly talking to me?! Before she could ask for clarity, Kyoya continued on as if he hadn't seen the mixed expressions on her face.
"Males usually do not converse as much as you and it is crucial for you to keep up your image as a host. As you are a host, Haruhi, you must put the ladies first, our customers first, and not your… feminine requirements. It is this instance that I request that you--"
“Kyoya-Senpai.”
Kyoya stopped at the sudden interruption, his eyes widening slightly at the rarity of actually being interrupted.
“I know how much this club means to you, but please understand that I am not the one at fault here.”
Haruhi quickly stood up and gave a quick bow.
“I’m sorry Senpai but I have clients to attend to.”
Kyoya, for all intent and purposes was bewildered to say the least, and with a stunned expression watched Haruhi dash over to the other side of the room. Haruhi knew she was probably going to get yelled at for running away, but she also knew that he wouldn’t make a scene in front of everyone. With a thumbs up to her fellow host members they all nodded in agreement and the party.
For the next half an hour, Haruhi made sure not to be in Kyoya’s vision and with the help of the other host members, Haruhi was able to finish attending her clients without another hitch. Of course when those famous doors closed for the afternoon, Haruhi knew her time was up.
“Haruhi Fujioka!”
Haruhi was running across the room as an enraged Kyoya slowly stalked after her, black book in hand. The other hosts members had suddenly disappeared from the room, Kyoya was hardly in the mood to notice, but Haruhi knew the time was upon her.
Running into the completely dark room, Haruhi attempted to close the door behind her but she was too late. Kyoya was right behind her, fuming.
Before he had time to react the lights switched on and several voices yelled
“Surprise! Happy Birthday Kyoya!”
Stunned. Kyoya nearly fell ontop of Haruhi as she tried to sidestep away from him. Laughter filled the room as balloons and party supplies were thrown at one another. Kyoya for the most part didn’t realize his mistake until too late.
And that was the day that Haruhi surprised Kyoya.
